If I start walking alot and doing step aerobics, will this help get me going?

of course! have you hear about pilates as well? it really does work, but be prepared it's alot of hard work too.
It will help but you will have to watch what you eat also. I read somewhere that losing weight is 70% dieting and 30% exercising.
